It may not be in the same league as the famous water lilies of French Impressionist, Claude Monet, but the stunning water lilies painting unveiled at UOW College on February 4 is certainly creating a stir.
Instead of rushing past the previously blank wall, staff and students were taking a break in their busy day to admire the striking water scene titled ‘Pond Reflections’.
There was surprise that the painting was created not by one artist but 23 participants from the Greenacres Art Program, many of whom were present to see the unveiling of their work.
UOW College General Manager, Julie Renwick, said ‘Pond Reflections’ was the fourth painting that the College purchased, having put in the successful bid at the Greenacres Ball auction every year.
We love all our paintings by the Greenacres artists but this one is definitely my favourite, Julie said.
It has such a beautiful blend of colours and has a real sense of peace and tranquillity I would have loved to have it in my own office.
Everybody at UOW College has been very impressed that art of this quality has been created by art students with a disability.
Not surprised by the reaction of UOW College staff and students is Greenacres Senior Art Therapist, Victoria Velozo, who said she is continually inspired by the pieces her students are creating.
For people with a disability, the art studio is a place where they can express what is in their hearts in a way that they often can’t in their everyday lives, Victoria said.
All the artists feel a great sense of pride and self-worth when they see their work displayed in a prominent position like UOW College and know that it will be admired and appreciated every day.
Greenacres, CEO, Chris Christodoulou said that it was through partnerships with organisations like UOW College that Greenacres could continue its art program.
We are so grateful to UOW College for their continual generous support which in turn supports us to enrich the lives of nearly 600 people with a disability living in our region, Chris said.
